Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Martini and Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz 1768 - Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Martini and Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz From Neus Systematisches Conchlyien Cabinet Nuremberg: 1768-1795 Hand-colored copperplate engravings 18 ½" x 16" framed The German physician-naturalist Friedrich Martini had intended to portray every known species of shells in color, but died in 1778 after the publication of the third volume. The Danish clergyman Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz continued work on the publication from 1779 to 1795, completing an additional eight volumes. Schubert and Wagner began work on a twelfth volume in 1829, but it was issued incomplete and is usually not present with the Martini and Chemnitz set.
