Printed and published by L. & V. Woolf at The Hogarth Press, Hogarth House, Richmond. 1919. FIRST EDITION. First state text with the 2 missprints on page 13. These were corrected in later copies. 8vo. (9.2 x 6.1 inches). -- An Eliot family copy with the ownership signature of Eliot's cousin Abigail A(dams) Eliot on the front blank endpaper. Abigail Eliot (1892-1992) was a well known authority on Nursery Education in America and is known to have visited England during 1919-1920 to study at Oxford. -- Sewn in original blue and white marbled paper wraps with the earliest issue title label, printed in red, to the front panel. One of fewer than 250 copies (probably circa 200) hand printed and bound by the Woolfs. The Hogarth Press accounts book shows that 180 copies were sold and twelve presentation or review copies were distributed within a year of publication. Both J. Howard Woolmer and Donald Gallup, in their respective bibliographies of Eliot and The Hogarth Press state that the earliest copies were bound up in paper wrappers of varying texture and design with a red lettered label, and that later copies were bound up in marbled paper wrappers, the majority with a label lettered in black. The fact that this copy has the earliest state, uncorrected text and the earliest state label throws some doubt on this assertion. The wrappers edges are a little chipped and show some minor fading, and there has been a neat, professional repair to a split in the fold of the wrapper but this is still overall a very good example of this fragile booklet. One of the rarest of Eliot's works, copies with the early state text and label seldom come onto the market, the addition of a family association attached to this copy, adding the strong possibilty of it being one of the 12 presentation copies, makes it rarer still. --- Gallup; A3.--- Woolmer; 4. --- Willis. L.eonard & Virginia Woolf as publishers: The Hogarth Press; page 30.
