New York: Simon and Schuster, 1952. Folio, x, (160) pp. With 126 heliogravure black-and-white plates. Caption booklet (12 pp.) loosely inserted, as issued. Original decorated boards, designed by Matisse. Decorated dust jacket, of the same design (small chips at edges, slightly worn, inoffensive tape at head and crown, former ownerÕs rubberstamps on upper and lower jacket. First printing of some of the most famous photographic images of the 20th century. Conceived and composed by TŽriade (and simultaneously published in France by ƒditions Verve); the plates were printed by Draeger Frres and the technical note at the end of the book describes how important was the role played by the printers in creating the prints from miniature negatives. The binding design is an elaborate decoupage composition by Matisse, made specifically for the work.
