From Michael de Freitas to Michael X
London: Andre Deutsch,, 1968. Octavo. Original orange boards, titles to spine gilt. With the pictorial dust jacket. Light bumps to top corners of boards, faint partial tanning to front free endpaper. An excellent copy in a jacket with mild sunning to spine panel and one tiny closed tear. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "26 July '69, To Molly, a Beautiful Sister, Peace and Love, Michael". Michael Abdul Malik adopted the nickname Michael X when he became a Black Power leader in 60s London. His activism earned him the support and friendships of famous figures such as Muhammad Ali and John Lennon. He was hanged in 1975 in his native Trinidad for the murders of two of his supporters, which had been committed on the commune he had founded.
