Narrative Journal of Travels Through the Northwestern Regions of the United States Extending from Detroit Through the Great Chain of American Lakes, to the Sources of the Mississippi River Performed as a Member of the Expedition Under Governor Cass
8vo. Modern brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. xiv, 419pp, (5pp). Hand-colored foldout frontispiece map, engraved title page, 7 called-for full-page engraved plates. Very good. Mild age toning. Tight, handsome first edition of this important travelogue in a sharp mid-20th century binding that preserves from the front pastedown a slip bearing the original ownership signature: "Henry B. Lockwood / March 26th, 1873 / New York" -- likely the early New York Stock Exchange member (1851-1915). Lockwood's name is also inkstamped near the bottom of the dedication page (iii). The foldout frontispiece map is lovely and bright, with a single old archival repair on verso, and two of the seven full-page plates ("Indian Manufactures" and "Geological View of Rock Formations on Lake Superior") are hand colored. Lacks errata slip, else a lovely copy of this important title. NEW HOWES S 190. SABIN 77862. STREETER SALE 1782.
