Histoire de la conquest de la Floride, par les Espagnols, sous Ferdinand de Soto
1685 - First French edition, and amongst the earliest available, of Soto’s exploration of Southern United States. 1685. Paris. Denys Thierry. In 8vo. 12 ff. + 300. Contemporary French speckled calf, raised bands to spine, tooled in gilt, red morocco title label lettered; joints renewed, else fine. Title page with minor mainly marginal toning, scattered leaves present minor toning but overall very good. First French edition of the Relacam Verdadeira –first published in 1557, which is known in a single copy. A rare book consisting of the anonymous eyewitness’ account of De Soto’s expedition to Florida ad the Southern United States. Furthermore, the work includes the dramatic tale of Juan Ortiz, a member of the Narvaez expedition captured by the Indians and rescued by De Soto. The anonymous Portuguese original is a known in a single copy and is found at the NYPL. This is the first translation into French, made by the 17th century French historian Citri de la Guette, to compete with the later Florida del Ynca of Garcilasso de la Vega (published in Lisbon in 1605), considering this less well-known and historically more accurate –and considering the contemporaneity a consistent argument- relation was due for notoriety. It is the basis and inspiration for the English translation of the following year “A relation of the invasion and conquest of Florida by the Spaniards” (1686). The NUC mistakenly records an edition of 1589 (actually the 1699 reprint by Couterot). “The English translation, the first account in the English language of the settlement of California, is inferior to the French edition being "erroneous as to numbers, distances, and names of places"— Sabin.” (Kenneth Nebenzahl). Sabin, 24864. Bell, H186. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
