Reliques of Ancient English Poetry
London: J. Dodsley, 1767. Three volumes, octavo, engraved frontispiece and titles, two other textual engravings; an attractive set with contemporary ownership inscriptions, contemporary calf, spines banded and gilt, red morocco labels, two joints cracked and chipped at head of spines. Second edition, expanded, of this celebrated collection. Samuel Johnson is known to have encouraged Percy in his work, and even to have contributed material to the volumes. Percy's anthology invigorated interest in early English poetry, and was a benchmark of its kind, influencing any number of later poets including Wordsworth and Coleridge. Percy gathered most of the material in this work from the 'Percy Folio', now in the British Museum. Famously, Percy saved the manuscript when he found it 'being used by the Maids to light the Fire'. Its influence had an avowed impact on Coleridge and Wordsworth, amongst others.
