Narrative of a Voyage from Montego Bay, in the Island of Jamaica to England? across the Island of Cuba to Havanna: from thence to Charles Town, South Carolina, Newcastle on the Delaware, and Baltimore, Maryland; and by land to Washington and back? in 1810
From Cuba to the United States, going through Florida and Washington. 1831. London. C.J.G. & F. Rivington. In 8vo (194 mm x 115 mm). Folding map in colour + iv + 112. Contemporary polished speckled calf, boards with interlacing fillets, spine richly tooled, with lettering pieces in red and blue; front cover becoming detached, minor rubbing. A fine copy, with the map in rich contemporary colour, some foxing, else fine.First edition. A rare work not cited by Sabin or any other usual references; furthermore, no copy has apparently sold at auction. Hallam describes in the form of a journal his voyage starting on 14th September 1809, when he sailed off Montego Bay on-board the schooner Mary for Trinidad, starting with a colourful note "... having John Hurlock, a free mulatto boy... who spoke Spanish, as my servant." The detail Hallam provides in his relation is remarkable, nothing escapes his eye, evidently interested in the architecture and conformation of the cities visited; on pp. 18 we find a thorough description of Havana as well as a description of the city ?"counting the churches, barracks, streets, and squares. The voyage took the author to Jamaica, Cuba, Florida, Charles Town, South Carolina, Newcastle, Delaware, Washington, Baltimore, Maryland, amongst other places. Illustrated with a folding map entitled \"Plan of the Harbour and City of Havanna.\"Provenance: John Sheepshanks engraved armorial ex libris on front paste down, art collector who presented his collection to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1857; Joseph Y. Jeanes, ex libirs on front pastedown; and Isaac W. Jeanes II, ex libris on front pastwedown.
