The Gadshill Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens
London: Chapman & Hall, 1897-, 1899. Octavo, 34 volumes, illustrated throughout, a fine set in uniform polished crimson calf by Frost of Bath, ornate gilt spines and black morocco labels. Complete works of Charles Dickens in splendid leather bindings with rich gold ornament. This is the Gadshill edition: a special project of long-established London publishing house of Chapman & Hall. This definitive publication offers the collected works in thirty-four volumes printed from the 1867-8 edition that was carefully corrected by Dickens. Additionally, the Gadshill edition contains informative introductions and notes by Andrew Lang who also contributed a general essay on Dickens as a serial novelist that is included in the final volume. Significantly, this edition faithfully reproduces the engraved illustrations and charming vignettes of the originals, often by famous popular illustrators and caricaturists such as George Cruickshank and Hablot Knight Browne (under the playful pseudonym 'Phiz').
