[49 documents on the history of the Thirty Years' War]. Liège, etc., 1629-1634[-ca. 1648]. Folio (32.5×23.5 cm). Manuscript on paper in Latin, French and Italian. Italian limp sheepskin parchment (ca. 1651), constructed from the gold-tooled parchment of two smaller bindings.
Phillipps manuscripts 7596. Interesting collection of 49 manuscript documents on the history of the Thirty Years' War, including contemporary copies of letters and other documents by King Gustav Adolf of Sweden, King Louis XIII of France, King Philippe IV of Spain and many other leading figures. About 16 are undated but the rest are dated 1629 to 1634 from Liège, Mainz, Versailles, Trier, Brussels, etc. Several watermarks or groups of related watermarks repeat in about 40 of the documents, and most of these are written in similar upright hands, so many of the documents are probably contemporary copies from a single or a small number of sources. The remaining documents show different watermarks and different (mostly sloped cursive) hands, so they may have been assembled from a variety of sources. Much of the paper may have come from Vosges but was used in the Low Countries in the 1630s. Since the spine title mentions the date 1651 and the binding decoration appears to be Italian, it seems likely that the collection was assembled and bound there. From the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps. The binding is wrinkled with a few small tears. Some of the paper stocks are browned and the edges of some documents tattered, but they are otherwise in good condition.
