First Edition. "This work contains twenty-three good coloured plates, exhibiting all the barks then met with in commerce" (Flückiger & Hanbury, quoted in Waring, p. 355). Delondre, a pharmacist and quinine manufacturer, was interested in both the scientific and commercial aspects of quinine; his book illustrates and describes 33 different varieties of both true and false cinchona from the mountainous regions of South America, which at the time were the sole source of cinchona bark. Drug manufacturers continue to extract quinine from cinchona even today, as it is not commercially feasible to synthesize it in the laboratory.
