Boston: Samuel Gerrish, 1712. Pamphlet, 8vo, [4],72, [1] pp. Lacks title page and leaves H1 and H4, expertly supplied in facsimile (toned paper), stitched and rebound with modern blue wrappers, expert repairs to first two pages, advertisement paid laid on back wrapper, few chips to edges of first four pages, not affecting text, normal aging, and some staining on last couple of pages. Recent rebinding work has made this a nice copy. Mather (1639-1723) was probably one of the most influential religious leaders in colonial America. He was a prolific writer, a president of Harvard, and held strong Puritan views that he often was willing to impose on others. This is an very rare title, and while Holmes indicates there were three previous editions published in London, they do not include Mather's epistle, which includes his name in type on the bottom of ppage iv. Holmes 144. Evans 1571. Sabin 40337. Jenkins Early American Imprints II. Holmes 588.
