Very Good. This portfolio contains 12 reproductions of water-color drawings by Elisabeth Moore Hallowell Saunders. Elisabeth Saunders was born in Alexandria, VA, and lived in Philadelphia and Baltimore, where she married Charles Francis Saunders (1859-1941). Both Elisabeth and Charles were avid naturalists, Charles beginning his publishing career in the 1890s. After a honeymoon in California and the Southwest in 1902, the couple moved to California in 1906 and settled in Pasadena where Charles devoted himself full time to writing. He eventually published more than a dozen books inspired by California and the Southwest. The couple collaborated on a number of publications, Charles as author and Elisabeth as illustrator; the pair were also avid photographers, and many of their photographs were used to illustrate Charles' books, including The Indians of the Terraced Houses (1912) and Under the Sky in California (1913). Elisabeth published two collections of California Wild Flowers - one with a set of six illustrations, and this with a set of 12. The intention was to provide models from which art students could paint California wild flowers if unable to observe the flowers in the field. The set of 12 illustrates California Poppy, Prickly Phlox, Brodiaea, Cream-Cups, Monkey Flower, Owl's Clover, Indian Paint-Brush, Wild Pansy, Mariposa Tulip, Wild Heliotrope, Shooting Star, and Scarlet Bugler. Charles is credited with the descriptive text that accompanies these reproductions. Worldcat records 14 holdings for the suite of 12 illustrations.
