Liber Fluviorum; or River Scenery of France... Descriptive Letterpress by Leitch Ritchie... Biographical Sketch by Alaric A. Watts
London: circa, 1870. Large thick octavo, with 61 fine steel-engraved views including a vignette title-page; a very good copy in contemporary red morocco ornately gilt, gilt edges. First edition in this form: another edition appeared in 1857. Turner's illustrations and Ritchie's text first appeared in slightly different form in 1833, 1834, & 1835 in three volumes that came to be known as Turner's Annual Tours; the plates were reissued in 1837 as Rivers of France; and finally this fullest version was published in 1853 as Liber Fluviorum. Turner's marvellous plates confirm Gordon Ray's verdict that he 'achieved his best landscapes on steel in this series…' (The Illustrator and the Book in England, 16). This version also contains the very useful biography of the artist, one of the first produced after his death and including the controversial terms of his will.
