George Washington approves import duties on tobacco, snuff and sugar
THIRD CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: AT THE FIRST SESSION, Begun and held at the City of Philadelphia, in the state of Pennsylvania, on Monday, the second of December, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three. ?" An ACT laying certain duties upon Snuff and Refined Sugar. (Philadelphia: Childs & Swaine, 1794) 6p, 8.25" x 13.75", loosely string bound in blue paper wraps. Lightly toned at folds with minor separations, typical marginal wear, minor pin holes which do not affect text, moderate dampstain to rear cover with some slight erosion.Passed by the Third Congress and bearing Washington's printed signature, "Go : WASHINGTON" as President on the final page dated June 5, 1794, the act laid a four cents per pound duty on imported tobacco, twelve cents per pound on snuff and four cents per pound on refined sugar.Also bears the printed signatures of Frederick Augusts Muhlenberg, as Speaker of the House, and Ralph Izard, as President of the Senate pro tempore.Dockete
