With 10 full-page plates, including frontis portrait and folding map of California. The covers show minor edge wear and a bit of fading; corners slightly bumped; text clean, but for some minor occasional foxing. The plates include views of Monterey Bay, San Francisco Harbor, San Carlos Mission, Santa Barbara, and cultural scenes. The map shows California north and south, Mexico, Texas, Florida, and most of the western U.S. It has inserts of Bodega Bay, San Francisco Harbor, San Diego, Monterey, Santa Barbara and San Gabriel, specifically produced for this book. "First book in the English language devoted exclusively to California and of permanent value on its Indians and early missions." (Howes F242) (Cowan p. 217). Overall, very good.
