History of the United States during the administrations of Thomas Jefferson (1801-9) and James Madison (1809-17). Volume I, II: the first administration of Jefferson; Volume III, IV: the second administration of Jefferson; Vol. V, VI: the first administration of Madison; Vol. VII, VIII, IX: the second administration of Madison. Considered a masterpiece of historical writing, Adams melded literary grace and style with the scientific approach to history pioneered by the German historian Leopold Ranke. Gary Wills, in Henry Adams and the Making of America (Boston and New York, 2005), praised the work as the "non-fiction prose masterpiece of the nineteenth century in America." Index at the conclusion of Vols. II, IV, VI, and IX. Howes calls this work "the most skillfully organized and most brilliantly presented interpretation of any period of our history yet attempted." Volumes I, II, VI, VII, and VIII include maps, some color tinted. Many of the maps relate to the Louisiana Purchase and the War of 1812. Covers lightly scuffed and rubbed at corners.
