A Journey to Bontuku, in the Interior of West Africa
John Murray for the Royal Geographical Society, 1892. John Murray for the Royal Geographical Society, 1892. 1st edition. Before moving on to become one of the leading writers in the early days of 'The Golden Age of Detective Fiction', R. Austin Freeman was a Colonial Service surgeon in the Gold Coast, in which role he joined an 1888 Government expedition into West Africa, to explore the area 'to the north of those portions of Upper Guinea known as the Gold and Ivory Coasts', in particular the town of Bontuku. In 1892 Freeman published his account of this pioneering trip in a 30-page article in the Royal Geographical Society's Supplementary Papers Vol 111, Part 2, with a colour map and engravings. It is this complete Journal which is offered here, in amazingly good condition, in its original blue wrappers lettered in black. Extremely scarce thus, indeed presently unique.
