La Petite Cady
Paris - La Renaissance du Livre, 1918. Paris - La Renaissance du Livre, 1918 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A romantic novel from French writer Louise-Hortense Grille de Rougeul. The pen name Camille Pert was the gender-ambivalent pseudonym of one Louise-Hortense Grille de Rougeul. For all its romantic excess, her literary output reveals an intense investment in the values of family life as the First World War approached. Cady is a cautionary figure used to warn Pert's readers against the supposed selfishness of modern mothers. La Petite Cady sets out the terms of an unfortunate upbringing against which her adult life is a mere reaction. She is neglected by a mother who is caught up in the public whirl of her 'career' as a politician's wife and allows her ne'er-do-well servants to raise her daughter abusively. Free to develop at an unseemly pace, she flirts with her father's firends and mixes with undesirables such as the demi-mondaine, Paulette, and her son, Georges. (After Intimacy: The Culture of Divorce in the West Since 1789)Condition: In a half-crushed-morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally smart, with some light rubbing and some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages browned but generally clean, with just a few scattered spots. Overall: VERY GOOD..
