Catharine Macaulay, 1731 - 1791, was an English historian and political polemicist. It was in the brief period of her first marriage that Catharine Macaulay embarked on her eight-volume History of England. For a woman to have conceived of such a project in the eighteenth century was extraordinary. That her husband actively encouraged her was equally remarkable. When her first volume was published in 1763 it was greeted with acclaim. Overnight she became the celebrated Mrs Macaulay. But behind the praise she received there was condescension and the belief that the writing of history was not for women -ODNB.
