Shakespeare's Twelfth Night: Original Costume Designs with Cloth Swatches
Collection of ten original costume designs on 7 leaves of costumes for a 1950s production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night by the German artist and designer, Ellen Carola Carstens. The colourful designs are accomplished in pen and watercolour with small swatches of cloth tipped onto the sheets for guidance to the wardrobe makers. The designs are on thick creamy yellow paper, mounted on black cardboard (17×24cm to 24×28cm). Each design is contained within a round-cornered pencilled box and each is annotated in pen with the character's name and sometimes in pencil with further names, some slightly Slavonic, that may refer to the actors involved in the production. The designs are for: 'Viola Sebastian', 'Tabia' (Sir Toby Belch), a pair of lavish female costumes, probably Olivia, 'Pagen' (likely Valentine and Curio), 'Nann' (apparently Feste), 'Orsino', 'Malvolio', two images - the second cross-gartered. Ellen Carola Carstens worked for the Badisches Staats-theater in Karlsruhe in the 1950s and created costumes for the Operafilm of Weber's Der Freischütz by the Hamburg Staast-oper in 1968. We've not been able to locate this production of Twelfth Night but the Slavonic tinge to the actors' names, particularly 'Horak' for Feste, suggest a Czech rather than German production of the play - Miroslav Horak played Malvolio in a production of the play in Zlin in 1952. Sets of costume designs of this kind are most uncommon in trade.
