Base Ball in Cincinnati
Cincinnati, 1908. Hardcover. Very good-. Second edition of this rare and desirable baseball book, which was first published in 1907. 277 pages, extensively illustrated with photographs and diagrams. Original blue cloth decorated in red. Moderate cover wear (corners rubbed and bumped, some soiling to the cloth). Binding sound, text and endpapers unmarked. Slight musty odor. An early and detailed account of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The author was the son of George Ellard, one of the original members of the Cincinnati Baseball club in 1866. Feeling that the notable history of baseball had been overlooked by historians of Cincinnati, and motivated by both civic and familial pride, Ellard drew on his own collection of baseball books, records, photographs, and memorabilia to rectify the situation. The result was the first complete history of the development of the sport in Cincinnati beginning with its organization in the 1860s and recounting the notable victories and defeats and the evolution of the club to the time of writing. It also includes a brief general account of the history of baseball in America and lays out the rules of the game.
