First Edition. Against his father's wishes Gleig obtained an Ensigncy in the 85th Regiment, serving with them in Wellington's Army in the Peninsula and seeing action at the crossing of the Bidassoa, at the siege of Bayonne, at Orthez, and at Toulouse. "The 85th was then dispatched to North America where Gleig was present at the attacks on Washington, Baltimore, and New Orleans. He was wounded on several occasions, though accounts differ as to the number of times." (ODNB) At the end of the Wars Gleig was pressured by his father to resign on half-pay & turn his efforts towards ordination. He graduated BA in 1818 and MA in 1821, and obtained a series of livings from which he barely scraped a living. In 1825 he submitted to William Blackwood a fictionalised account of his war experiences, The Subaltern, "It was a great success [when serialized] and well written... Blackwood rushed a book version into press, and a revised edition was offered in London by John Murray in 1826." This was the foundation of his writing career which saw him publish some 58 books in his lifetime. It also secured for him an introduction to the Duke of Wellington, who thereafter acted as his "half-hearted patron." He was appointed Chaplain of Chelsea Hospital in 1834, Chaplain-General of the Forces in 1844, and Inspector-General of Military Schools in 1846. The present compilation brings together papers on Military Bridges, the War in the Punjaub, India and its Army, and Military Education amongst other subjects.
