Contemporary half burgundy morocco (rebacked), lettered in gilt within gilt ruled compartments along spine; backstrip and covers very firm and square, showing no splits, just mildly rubbed; contents clean and tight with no loose leaves and no pen-marks, just some occasional spotting, age-toning and browning and a little wear to the foredges; a Durban Club bookplate at the front pastedown, but not from a library and so no such stamps or labels; size: 8vo (240mm x 170mm); collation: pp. viii (includes title-page), 590, and 4 chromolithographs, two steel-engraved portraits, 40 half-page woodcuts, 28 whole-page woodcuts, and two charts at rear (one folding). A detailed account of the voyage of the German Ships Germania and Hansa, the wreck of the Hansa in the ice, sled journeys and observations of natural phenomena in Greenland, etc. A very good copy of the first English edition.
