The Struggle for Scutari
London: Edward Arnold, 1914. London: Edward Arnold,, 1914. (Turk, Slav, and Albanian). Octavo. Original red cloth, title in gilt to the spine, and in black to the upper board. Frontispiece and 15 other plates, line-drawn illustrations to the text. Ex-Signet Library with their bookplate and inked inscription to the front pastedown, a little rubbed, slight lean, some light browning, but overall very good. First edition. Account of the impact of the First Balkan War, by the intrepid pro-Albanian traveller. Durham's third publication on the region; "Following an illness, and dismayed at the prospect of remaining a home-bound spinster, Edith Durham began, when already nearly forty, to travel rough in the then hardly visited Balkans, and she described her experiences in a series of vivid and forthright books" (ODNB). A somewhat controversial figure in balkanological circles for her partisanship toward the Albanian people, she is still revered in that country being described by then president Alfred Moisiu in 2004 as; "one of the most distinguished personalities of the Albanian world during the last century".
