THE TORRIANI BOOK OF HOURS - A filigree masterpiece with a uniquely beautiful cover * * * The Torriani family was a patrician dynasty in Lombardy, which was replaced by the Visconti as ruler of Milan. The Torriani Book of Hours comes from the hand of Matteo da Milano, one of the most important miniaturist of Milanese origin, who worked for the most famous houses of the Italian Renaissance. He was a member of the studio of Giovanni Ambrogio de Predis, Leonarde da Vinci worked with on the Virgin of the rocks in 1483. * * * The fact that in this book of hours still is with the original cover from the 15th Century, makes this masterpiece to an absolute rarity. The two covers of chased silver gilt are richly decorated with cameos of Saint Catherine and Lucy. On the inside of the book covers we find enamelled representations such as the Judas kiss or the Carrying of the Cross.
