THE LEGENDS OF HOLY MARGARETA AND AGNES * Limited Facsimile Edition * Manuscript Codex Ricc. 453 › Biblioteca Riccardiana (Florence, Italy) * Facsimile Edition: 1 volume * Mint copy
ArtCodex - 2009 - THE LEGENDS OF HOLY MARGARETA AND AGNES * * * This golden masterpiece was a gift to a pregnant noblewoman. For Margaret is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and is the patron saint of women in labor and difficult births since - according to the legend - she was released intact from the body of a dragon. Saint Margaret and Saint Agnes are connected by the virgin martyr for the faith in Jesus Christ. Since both were already executed around the year 300, over the centuries there have evolved imaginative legends which culminated at the time of the Crusades. * * * The manuscript was created in the 13th century in the vicinity of the Master of Gerona and includes 33 scenes with miniatures and numerous filigree initials in blue and red color. On a background of 23-carat gold leaf fine figures are shown in front of the magnificent scenery adapting Byzantine style elements. Today the manuscript is kept as Ricc. 453 in the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence, Italy. * * * Title: The Legends of Holy Margareta and Agnes * Owner / Shelf mark: Codex Ricc. 453 › Biblioteca Riccardiana (Florence, Italy) * Alternative Titles: Die Legenden der Heiligen Margareta und Agnes * Theme: Legendarium * Style: Gothic / Byzantine * Date: 13th century * Origin: Genoa (Italy) * Format: 14.5 × 10.3 cm * Extent: 124 pages * Language: Latin * Content: Legends of Holy Margareta and Agnes * Artists / Schools: Circle of Master of Gerona * Illustrations: 33 full-page miniatures and innumerable filigree capitals in blue and red colors.
