Large Manuscript Leaf on Vellum - Divine Office- Liturgia Honorium
Europe: Manuscript, 1250 Europe: Manuscript, 1250. Intricately inscribed vellum leaf from a 13th century Divine Office Liturgia Honorium. Probably 13th century continental. 34 x 25 cm (approximately 13" x 10"). Text is written in Latin on quality vellum in dark brown ink. The large gothic bookhand script (3 lines per inch) is in two columns of 30 lines. Recto includes a page number (224) in red in the upper right corner, 1 large (three-line) capital in red, 5 large (two-line) capitals in red and blue, and number of single-line capitals in red and blue. Verso has 1 large (three-line) capital in blue, 4 large (two-line) capitals in red and blue, and a number of single line capitals in red and blue. Beautiful marginal designs on both sides. The leaf is bright and clean, containing Psalms 78 (vulgate numbering) indicating that this leaf was probably read during Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. Psalms 78 was one three psalms (105 and 106 were the others) reserved for those seasons because they throw special light on the Old Testament history of salvation as the forerunner of its fulfillment of the New.
