Applied Radiochemistry
Ithaca, NY, Cornell University Press; London, Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press,, 1936. Ithaca, NY, Cornell University Press; London, Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press,, 1936. The George Fisher Baker Non-Resident Lectureship in Chemistry at Cornell University. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt and to upper board in blind. Portrait frontispiece. Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Cloth lightly rubbed, a few small worn spots to extremities, tiny puncture to spine, contents faintly toned. A very good copy. First edition, first impression of the author's only full-length book. Hahn, in addition to being the discoverer of nuclear fission, was the founder of the field of radiochemistry, in which radioactive isotopes are used to study the properties of non-radioactive isotopes and chemical reactions. This volume compiles twelve talks on radiochemistry given while he was a visiting professor at Cornell University between March and June of 1933. It was for many years the major textbook on the subject, with physicist Glenn T. Seaborg writing later that, "As a young graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley in the mid-1930s and in connection with our work with plutonium a few years later, I used his book 'Applied Radiochemistry' as my bible… I recall reading and rereading every word in these laws of co-precipitation many times… I doubt that I have read sections in any other book more carefully or more frequently than those in Hahn's 'Applied Radiochemistry'" (Seaborg, From Alchemy to Atoms). Scarce.
