Covers slightly rubbed, spine ends bumped, edges tanned; a few small white marks to spine of The Moorish Empire and rear cover of The Moors; small delicate repair to spine of The Moors. A fine set. First editions of Meakin's three key works on Morocco. Meakin's father established the Times of Morocco in 1884, and was joined by his son as assistant editor, then editor. "He at once studied the Moorish people and their language. Adopting native dress and the native name Tahar bil Mikki, he mixed freely with all classes, soon mastered the Moorish dialect of Arabic... and closely observed Moorish life" (ODNB). In 1902 he was awarded the Turkish Order of the Medjidie in recognition of his studies in Islam. All with bookplate of Chicago businessman William H. Bartlett to front pastedown and small number plate to rear pastedown.
