Besides the best account of the leaders of the Boston Tea Party, the tipped in document signed by Thomas Melvill (whose biographical sketch is found on pages cxxix-cxxxv (129-135) presents a Port of Boston document where he had been a major leader of one of the most notable events leading to the American Revolution. It is also signed by Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn, 1783-1851, who was a Congressman from Massachusetts and Collector of the Port of Boston. In addition, it was for the firm of [Abiel] Chandler & [Benjamin] Howard located on Central Wharf Street in Boston and one of the most prosperous merchants in Boston. The schooner Volant built in 1653 was one of the most noteworthy in early American history; it was lost on August 18, 1905. The importance of Melville in the history is noted both with his picture twice in the book and the long biographical sketch. He was the grandfather of Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick. Book label of Louis Manning known as the "wood butcher" but also a book collector at the end of the 19th Century. A very nice copy bound in brown pictorial cloth depicting a ship with the dumping of the tea overboard in black lettering black, spine lettering gilt. A Handsome copy.. Original Cloth Hardcover.
