FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 1657, "Traité de la connoissance des animaux" translated by a Person of Quality (Pierre Chanet). Small 8vo, approximately 160 x 100 mm, 6¼ x 3¾ inches, pages: [8], 1-304, bound in full panelled speckled calf, gilt lettered label to spine, gilt decoration to spine, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Binding slightly rubbed, top compartment has hinges cracked and repaired in red morocco with matching gilt decoration, slight cracking to foot of upper cover, occasional pale stain and brown spot, several misnumberings but all catchwords and signatures correct, trimmed at head, with some small loss to some running titles, not affecting main text, large old ink presentation inscription on fly leaf, large coat of arms on blank side of marbled endpaper (James William Sleigh Godding).
