Die Minen und der Unterirdische Krieg
Eleven folding lithographed plates. viii, 164 pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, cont. sheep-backed marbled boards (upper cover a little defective), flat spine gilt, green leather lettering piece on spine. Wien: "K.K. Hof-und Staats-Ärarial-Druckerei," 1817. First edition of this "incunable of lithography" concerning the construction of mines to attack fortified positions. Hauser (1784-1828), was an Austrian military engineer who wrote several other works on artillery, strategy, and military engineering. In 18th-century Europe, several battles involved mining and counter-mining, most notably the siege of Schweidnitz in 1762 during the Seven Years' War. Austrian and Prussian sappers played a central role as each side constantly probed for weaknesses in the other's lines. In the present work, Hauser proposes new methods for mining below fortifications to weaken deeply entrenched adversaries. He provides practical information including the assembly of the mines and how to load and ignite explosive devices underneath defenses. He also discusses the theory of underground warfare and whether it is best employed as a defensive or offensive strategy. The lithographed plates depict several examples of intricate fortifications, followed by plates showing where to build tunnels in order to weaken the defenses. Plate VII recreates the siege of Schweidnitz and complements explanatory text starting on page 86. Several of the plates depict the technical problems related to tunnel construction. Others depict expansive networks of tunnels and trenches. A fine copy. ❧ Wurzbach, VIII, 81-"Seinen Arbeiten wird von Kennern des Fachs Gründlichkeit und Gediegenheit zugeschrieben.".
