Amsterdam, Frederik Muller & Co., 1878.. 8 vo (21,5 x 16,5 cm). Pp. xxvii, 20 leaves; 2 large folding maps and 1 double-page map; 22 leaves; 47 pages; Original printed boards. Original spine newly mounted. Some browning to binding, text and maps clean and fresh, an uncut, partly unopened and thus unread and wide-margined copy.***A very interesting and important item containing the English translations as well as reproductions of the original Dutch and Latin texts of tracts on Henry Hudson and by Isaac Massa and Pedro Fernandes de Quiros. The book describes Hudson's ill-fated attempt to find a North-West Passage, which was first published in Dutch in 1612 and contains a folding map based on Hudson's expedition. Besides, it contains the report by Isaac Massa on his 9-year stay in Russia including the map he drew of the Arctic coast of Siberia. Gerritzs published Hudson's, Massa's and also Pedro Fernandez de Quiro's report on Australia Incognita, the latter's report also being included in this book. De Quiros is considered to be 'the discoverer of the New Hebrides' (Henze). The translations were by F.J. Millard '...quite new and extremely careful', the old one in the rare collection of Purchas, 1625, being incomplete, incorrect, and difficult to obtain' (preface). - Hill 292, Henze 3, 644 ff. (Hudson), Henze 4, 495 ff. (Quiros). Reise. Reisen. Travel. Exploration. Expedition. Polar. Arctic. Arktis. North East Passage. North West Passage. Nordpol. North Pole..
