New York: J.J. Augustin Publisher, (1945). New York: J.J. Augustin Publisher, (1945). Near fine in boards in a beautiful example of the fragile jacket, very lightly soiled, with just a tiny bit of loss at the spine ends; housed in the exceptionally rare slipcase, mostly complete if heavily worn, with just a fragment remaining from the paper label. Only the second copy in slipcase I have seen in commerce. A rarity in anything approaching nice condition, and truly scarce thus.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. 104 gravure plates. Text by Edwin Denby. 500 copies printed. Although Brodovitch is best known as a graphic designer and art director, Ballet remains one of the most influential of the great 20th century photobooks, presaging every trend in cinematic book editing, and completely obliterating the notion that the image had to be representational of the subject. Brodovitch would have taken great comfort in Daido Moriyama's Provoke office. (Parr / Badger, v1, 240-241; Roth 110-111; Open Book 136-137; Auer 314).
