New York and London : Hodder & Stoughton, 1909 First American Edition. Bound in publisher's original brown cloth with stamped gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Front cover has stamped gilt pictorial design, representing perched eagle, with ornamental borders. Book has mild external wear, with darkening to spine and along edges of front cover, with some shelf wear. End papers display some offsetting. Interior pages are clean and bright. Illustrated with 25 tipped-in color plates to accompany each fable. All called-for illustrations are present. Binding is solid. Un-paginated. ***Aesop - Aesop was a Greek writer credited with a number of popular fables. Older spellings of his name have included Esop(e) and Isope. Although his existence remains uncertain and no writings by him survive, numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day.
