Original marbled boards, printed paper label to spine. A very good copy, the marbled boards still quite bright. First trade edition, first impression, one of 500 copies printed. Inscribed by the author in pencil on the front free endpaper, "To Miss Helen Hayes with best wishes from Duff Douglas Ainslie. University Club, Los Angeles, Upper High St", and a subsequent owners note in ink at the top of the page, "Purchased from Helen Hayes – 63". Grant Duff Ainslie was a poet, critic, and diplomat who befriended Oscar Wilde and contributed to the Yellow Book. He was the first translator of the Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce and also lectured on Hegel. This volume is a compilation of his poems, some new and others collected from previous books and periodical appearances. The recipient, Helen Hayes, was an American actress whose career spanned nearly 80 years, from the Silent Era to the 1980s, and has been called "The First Lady of American Theatre".
