Map of the State of Texas from the Latest Authorities, by J. H. Young from Mitchell’s Universal Atlas
Thomas Cowperthwait & Co. 1850 - J. H. Young’s hand-colored map of Texas was the most influential atlas map of the period and the first to widely disseminate Texas’ new state boundaries, as a result of the Compromise. This is the second state of the "new" map of Texas issued by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Inset maps "Northern Texas" and "Map of the Vicinity of Galveston City". Inset table "Population &c. of Texas according to the Census of 1850". Shows the newly resolved boundary of northern Texas at latitude 36°, which marked the end of Texas’ claim to the upper Rio Grande and eastern New Mexico. Details noted such as county towns, post offices, and railroads (existing and in progress). Battle sites of the Mexican-American War are indicated with American flags. Richly annotated with notes describing the railroads, Staked Plain, Rio Grande, Grand Indian Crossing, and the population from the 1850 Census. Significant cartographic document in the early history of Texas. Western edge of the frontier includes a line of U. S. forts with names underscored. Frontier fortresses appear in the western edge of the populated areas, including Ft. Gates, Ft. Croghan and Ft. Inge. An excellent map of the Texas frontier during a period of some of it's greatest expansion. Small bb-size stain (not affecting map image). Barely noticeable sulfide spot and two very small and extremely light marks, neither of which are in the land area. I SELL ONLY AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE MAPS & PRINTS --I DO NOT SELL REPRODUCTIONS.
