The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D
London - T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1811 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of what has been described as the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature: James Boswell'sbiography of the eminent lexicographer Samuel Johnson. Complete with notes on his works, copies of his letters, and Johnson's hitherto unpublished notes and works. With two folding facsimiles of Johnson's handwriting to volumes III and IV, as well as frontispiece portrait of Johnson to volume I. Johnson has been described as arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history. This edition was the one most frequently reprinted in the 19th century, and is often spoken of as 'the best of the pre-Crokerian editions'. The more general critical tendency now, however, seems to be to return to the text of the third, as being more nearly that which the author himself approved (Pottle). Complete in four volumes. Condition: In tree calf bindings. Externally sound, with some rubbing and marksto the boards. Front joints of Volume I, II, IIIand IV and rear joints of Volume I and IIIstarting but firm. Remains of label to rear board ofvolumeIV. Internally, firmly bound. Copperplate ink inscription to front pastedowns, dated 1812, and some ink annotations to the text. Offsetting to title page of volume I from frontis. Pages have some scattered light spotting. Overall: GOOD..
