Jude the Obscure
London: Osgood, McIlvaine, and Co.,, 1896. With an Etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a Map of Wessex. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and roundel to upper board gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Etched frontispiece on series-title verso, map of Wessex at end. Ownership inscription. Spine rolled, corners nicked, early hinge cracked but holding fine, offsetting from frontispiece, and light spotting to endpapers; a very good copy. First edition, first impression, of Hardy's final novel, published on 1 November 1895, as volume 8 of The Wessex Novels. The page numbering was altered during printing, so that sigs. A-H exist in two distinct states, often found mixed. In the first state page numbers are present on partially blank pages, but this was altered so that numbers were omitted at the chapter endings (in conformity with the later gatherings). This copy is predominantly in early state, with only two pages in unnumbered state.
