THE CLAVERINGS (Superb Copy, Fine in Original Publisher's Cloth)
London: Smith, Elder, 1867. Trollope, Anthony. THE CLAVERINGS. London: Smith, Elder, 1867. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION in Two Volumes, original publisher's bright green cloth, gilt, ornately blocked in black and gold (an example of the scarce and preferable first binding state). 8vo, all ads correct. In FINE, ORIGINAL UNTOUCHED CONDITION, rarely seen thus. Virtually unworn with only the most trivial of faults; a little light foxing can be found on the edges, on both sets of prelims as well as the title of Volume One. Michael Sadleir, Trollope's bibliographer, said of THE CLAVERINGS that "there is not a loose end, not a patch of drowsiness, not a moment of false proportion." It still stands as one of the best of Trollope's forty-seven novels and one of the famous Victorian author's high spots. This is the compelling tale of Henry Clavering's unrequited love for beautiful Julia Brabazon (who declines his pure affections for a depraved marriage with a member of the nobility which, alas, leads to her fall from grace). However, being jilted has the fortuitous result of eventually guiding Henry toward redemption and a better outcome (happy ending). In England's 1860s, men struggled for career and it was no easy task for a simple engineer (in this case) to rise in the highly rigid Victorian caste system. But Julia Brabazon got the truly raw deal, as women had only marriage as a path to getting ahead in the world and the wrong choice, as here, was the way to ruin. An interesting social document as well as a fascinating novel. Sadleir, Trollope, p. 27. Wolff 6771. Stunning copy of the first edition, first binding. A better copy would be difficult to find... First Edition. Fine. Illus. by M. Ellen Edwards.
