The Sea-Wolf [With Original Bank Check Signed by Jack London]
New York: the MacMillan Company 1904, 1st edition, with white lettering on spine. () [viii], 1-355 [+ 3 pages ads]. Very good. 12mo. Powder blue cloth with white lettering on spine and front cover. The cover shows a white, orange and blue image of a sailor holding a rope on a ship, with the sky and water in the background. The boards are bumped and worn at corners and ends of spine (with some light wear to edges as well); they are also lightly spoiled, especially at edges and on spine, with some small white spots on back. There is a small fold to the top corner of the first page and a crease on the half title. A few small discoloured spots within text block and very mild foxing to back of half title; else the text block is clean and tight. 6 B / W plates throughout, including frontis. Top edge gilt with other outer edges roughly trimmed. A lovely copy. With a cheque from Central Bank of Oakland signed by Jack London laid in. The check has three ink stamps from processing and two small closed tears. There is another version of the book with gilt lettering instead of white on the spine, however the sequence of issue for these is unknown. Sissons & Martens; 20. John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney, January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. This book is a psychological adventure novel about a literary critic, survivor of an ocean collision, who comes under the dominance of Wolf Larsen, the powerful and amoral sea captain who rescues him. The check is dated Nov 7th, 1904 and is made out to "Goldberg Bowen & Co." a California gorcer, in the amount of $29.57..
