Broadside: Colored Voters Read
Letterpress broadside, 10x8¼. Paper evenly toned, in very good or better condition. The broadside was sponsored by the Democratic Party appealing to the 'Colored Voter' not to be taken in by the promises of the so called ?Third Party?. The Third Party refers to the short-lived Populist Party, which was formed in 1879. The Third Party, also known as the People?s Party, may not have lasted all that long, but it was somewhat successful with farmers in the South and the Midwest. The thrust behind this broadside is that there is no real support for the notion that if the Third Party comes into power that schools will be provided for African American children. ?What Evidence have the Negroes of this state that Schools will be provided for their children in the case the Third Party gets into Power.? The broadside also provides information on taxes and the distribution of school funds. Interestingly, it suggests that Negroes were getting three times as much money as they paid in for their schools.
