The Marches of The British Armies in the Peninsula of India during the Campaigns of 1790 and 1791. Illustrated and Explained by Reference to a Map, Compiled from Authentic Documents transmitted by Earl Cornwallis from India by Major Rennell.
London: W. Bulmer and Co. for the Author, 1792 - Octavo. Recent sprinkled half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, low bands, foliate tool to the compartments. Small professional repair to the fore-edge of the title page, no loss of text, light browning, else very good. Folding plan of the Battle of Seringapatam, more properly Arakere, and 3 folding Orders of Battle. Second edition, same year as the first. Third Anglo-Mysore War. Uncommon, and detailed account drawn from official accounts of Cornwallis and Medows's campaigns against Tipu Sultan down to the Battle of Arakere in May 1791. Tipu's army was routed and retreated into Seringapatam, but the British forces were forced to return to Bangalore by the problems of supply that had dogged the entire campaign. The map referred to on the title page was issued separately, and is "lacking" from all copies listed on OCLC, which locates just a single copy, the India Office Records copy in BL. "The father of Indian geography", Rennell served with both the East India Company's marine and military as surveyor and draughtsman, in the 1780s producing a series of maps, atlases and memoranda which were much reprinted and set the standard for future works.
