(20),504 pp. and 71 fine engraved plates + 7 lithographed plates from another work, illustrationg the themes of the chapters. Titlepage in red a. black. A few brownspots and some scattered offsettings from the plates. Printed on good paper.. Second English edition of this highly estimated work which is a translation of the original work in Dutch "De Groot Schilderbook" from 1712. Lairesse was a Dutch painter and theorist and the foremost representative of Classicism in Holland. His work was highly influential on the 18th century painters like Jacob de Wit and Jan van Mieris. Rembrandt painted him around 1665. In 1874 Robert Browning wrote on the fly-leaf of his copy of his first edition of the English translation: "I read this book more often and with greater delight when I was a child than any other; and still remember the main of it most gratefully for the good I seem to have got from the prints and wonderful text." - Brunet III:775 (Dutch edition)
