London: Henry Colburn. VG. 1829. 2nd Edition. Leather & Boards. The 2nd edition, bound in 2 volumes, published the same year as the fi rst edition which was bound in one volume. 2 Volume set bound in origi nal marbled boards and professionally rebacked spines with the origina l leather title labels. Illustrated, 1 engraved folding map, 4 folding plans. X-College Library set but with only 1 cancellation stamp on th e title page of the volumes. No other library marks or signs. VG or be tter. Leather corners are rubbed, light tanning to the title pages, ve ry mild foxing to the maps. Overall bright, clean and unmarked set. Jo hn Lewis Burckhardt undertook the journey to Mekkah in 1814, disguised as an Arab; he had used the name Sheikh Ibrahim in his travels, which he began in 1809 under the sponsorship of Sir Joseph Banks and the Af rican Association. Burckhardt's description of the Hedjaz was the firs t accurate one to reach Europe. Burckhardt transmitted to the Associat ion the most accurate and complete account of the Hedjaz, including th e cities of Mekka and Medina, which had ever been received in Europe. The folding plans include Mekkah, Medina, Wady Muna and Arafat. .
