Oneiros Press Poetry Broadsides. The First Ten Years
Chicago: Oneiros Press. 2011. First Edition thus, one of 25 copies only, each containing 14 original broadsides assembled by the publisher / designer, Shawn Sheehy, each broadside a different design by Mr. Sheehy for the individual poem printed on the broadside which is signed by the author and numbered. Page size: portfolio holding the14 broadsides is 21-5/16 inches high and 13-3/8 inches wide, 7 of the broadsides are 20-1/2 inches and between 12-5/16 and 13-1/8 inches wide; 6 are17 inches high and between 11 and 10-1/4 inches wide; 1 is 19-3/4 inches high and 11-13 /16 inches wide. On various papers: handmade paper by Shawn Sheehy for Peirce, Albergotti, Johnson, Prufer; all others are printed on commercial stock. Bound: the broadsides are laid in loose in a grey paper portfolio which closes with a wrap- around band with a yellow paper label printed in grey and black with the title and emblem of the press. & Oneiros Press was founded in 2000 with the intent of showcasing some of the finest poets in America on letterpress broadsides that provide visual access into the heart of the poems. The collection features nationally-recognized poets as well as winners of the Oneiros Press Poetry Broadside Contest. This is the first time they have been assembled for sale as a group.& The titles and authors included are: "Where Good Swimmers Drown" by Susan Elbe, "Things to Do in the Belly of the Whale" by Dan Albergotti, "Fallen from a Chariot" by Kevin Prufer, "When You Walk the Curtis Tungsten Mine Road" by Frances Ruhlen McConnel, "Hurricane Linda Strikes California Coastline" by Thea Kuticka, "Abandoning the Hives" by Jennifer Sweeney, "Under" by Kathleen Peirce, "American Male, Acting Up" by Peter Johnson, "Tormenta de Muerte" by Ai, "Shift" by Barbara McGrath, "Deep Chess" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, "Lack, the Willow" by Jane Mead, "In the X-ray of the Sarcophagus of Ta-Pero" by Albert Goldbarth, and "What Would Be Worthy of this Space?" by Aislinn Hunter. In addition to the 14 original poetry broadsides, there is a colophon noting that there are 25 sets of these broadsides assembled by the designer, Shawn Sheehy which is signed and dated by him. & Each broadside is printed letterpress using a variety of matrices - some were letterpress printed using movable lead type, some were letterpress printed using magnesium plates, some were letterpress printed using polymer plates - by either Mr. Sheehy, Stephen Frech, April Sheridan or Sarah Vogel, with Mr. Sheehy's design especially for each poem, each sheet with the emblem and name "Oneiros Press." The press editor is Stephen Frech.& The broadsides themselves were printed as early as 2001, with the most recent being "Abandoning the Hives" by Jennifer Sweeney from June 2011. & This handsome set of poetry broadsides not only contains verse by some of our best known writers in a signed, limited edition, but the visually arresting art and design of Shawn Sheehy.
