New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1846. 2 volumes bound into one. First edition of each book, bound into the first issue original cloth binding, intermediate state of each printing with “R. Craighead’s Power Press” not present. BAL states that copies bound into the original cloth bindings were always of mixed printing states. With a colored frontispiece and vignette titlepage. 8vo, publisher’s original pale blue blindstamped cloth, the spine lettered in gilt. The book now housed in a fine half green morocco foldover clamshell case lettered in gilt between raised bands of the spine. [i-vi], [1]-207; [i-vi], [1]-211 pp. A well preserved copy with the textblock in very nice condition. One signature loose, the original spine panel re-laid onto new backing. FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH OF THIS EARLY AND QUITE SCARE HAWTHORNE TITLE. Hawthorne spent three years in the Old Manse in Concord.
