A CHRISTMAS CAROL. In prose. Being A Ghost Story of Christmas. By Charles Dickens. With illustrations by John Leech. Tenth Edition.
Chapman and Hall, 186, Strand., London 1844 - 8vo. 4.25 x 6.5 inches. [viii] + 166 pp. + [2] pp. advertisements. Title in red and blue, subtitle in blue. Bound in original red cloth, gilt with blind stamped borders and front board and spine titles enclosed by vignettes of Christmas foliage, gilt. All edges gilt. Yellow endpapers. Label of T. Sowler Bookseller 4 St. Ann's Square Manchester on front pastedown. Light offsetting from the plates to text but frontispiece unaffected. One gathering is slightly out of alinement and the cloth only very slightly worn on extremities, a really good copy. Illustrated by four hand-coloured plates, including frontispiece, by John Leech, four wood engravings in text, by W. J. Linton, after Leech, and decorated by holly vignette on title page. This tenth edition, appearing in 1844 the year after the first publication, is, apart from the altered edition statement and date, very similar to the first edition. See Smith for an exhaustive analysis of the variations in the early editions of the work. The expense of hand colouring the plates greatly reduced the author's profits and he never again employed colour in any of his books. The tenth edition was the last published by Chapman and Hall and from the eleventh, Dickens, dissatisfied with their performance, switched to Bradbury and Evans, already the printers of the early editions. This tenth edition seems scarce judging by its appearance for sale (there are none available currently on the web) ART / LITERATURE DICKENS LIT. FICTION 19TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED ART / LITERATURE Smith, Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth, 1983.
