1846. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. First Edition of Dickens's fourth Christmas book. This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man, both ultimately settling in with him (though only one is married to him) -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth, married her sister Catherine, and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina.~This copy has the vignette title page in the second state, with "A Love Story" on a banner -- without an angel -- above the publisher's imprint (Todd's C2, with the "D" in "BRADBURY" slightly broken). The vast majority of copies (easily 90% we would say) is in the fourth state (with an angel holding the banner, and no publisher's imprint), and copies in the first and third state are virtually impossible to find.~This copy's condition is very good (minor wear at the spine ends, one small mark on the rear cover); atypically, the fragile original endpapers are not cracked. Smith II pp 60-65; Podeschi (Gimbel) A116.
